Program Name: Alteryx – Beginner to Intermediate

  • Hands-on practice (Demo -> Practice side-by-side).
  • First, show a demo with the problem statement and solution.
  • Then, slow down the pace to let people practice along with the Instructor.

1st time users of Alteryx; Has attended the 90-mins Alteryx Beginner’s Orientation Session.

Objectives: By the end of this session, you will be able to-

  1. Understand the use case of Top 30 Alteryx tools for data preparation & automation
  2. Use Alteryx to clean-up unstructured data

Important Note: This is a hands-on practice based workshop. Learners are expected to complete the program pre-requisites before the start of the program.

  2. Download Alteryx and check if its activated for use i.e. You can drag and drop tools in the canvas (workflow area).

A: INTRODUCTION TO ALTERYX

Concept: Create a “Repeatable Workflow” using “Specialist Tools”

Walkthrough of the User Interface (UI) & Understanding essential terminologies:

  1. Workflow
  2. Favorites Palette
  3. Workflow Canvas
  4. Tool Palettes – Input vs Output Anchor
  5. Configuration Panel

B: ESSENTIAL TOOLS OF ALTERYX

IN/OUT – INPUT DATA:

  1. Single Access Point for any data file or connection (Import)
  2. Select a sheet; List of sheet names
  3. Start reading on specified line number
  4. Use wildcard charater asterisk for importing multiple files in a folder

IN/OUT – BROWSE:

  1. View data profile information (nulls, uniques, non-nulls) in a visual format
  2. Shortcut: Ctrl Shift B

PREPARATION – SELECT:

  1. Select, deselect, reorder and rename fields
  2. Change field type or size
  3. Assign a description

Theory – Basics of Data Type:

  1. String, Numeric, Date/Time, Boolean; Spatial Objects
  2. Date format as accepted by Alteryx
  3. Impact of Data Types in Alteryx workflows, and the imporatance of SELECT Tool and Metadata window
  4. How is NULL value treated in Alteryx and it’s impact in various scenarios

TRANSFORM – SUMMARIZE:

  1. Summarize by grouping, summing, counting, string concatenation

PREPARATION – FILTER:

  1. Split data in two streams – TRUE & FALSE based on the user defined condition(s)
  2. Introduction to Formula Expressions

IN/OUT – OUTPUT DATA:

  1. Export the output to multiple Excel files (e.g. csv, yxdb) or sheets based on a field’s values
  2. Related settings – overwrite, append; prefix/suffix

PREPARATION – MULTI-ROW FORMULA:

  1. Create/Update a single column using an expression that can refer to columns in next and/or prior rows

JOIN – UNION:

  1. Concept: “Stacks” the 2 streams on top of each other ~ Append Query
  2. Column Synchronisation: Auto-Config by Name vs Position
  3. Column Synchronisation: Manual-Config

TRANSFORM – TRANSPOSE:

  1. Convert Cross-tab data table to a flat file format
  2. Similar to Excel Power Querys’ Unpivot Column

TRANSFORM – CROSSTAB:

  1. Similar to Excel Pivot Table

PREPARATION – DATA CLEANSING:

  1. Replace null values, Remove punctuation
  2. Modify capitalization (case change)

PARSE – TEXT TO COLUMN:

  1. Split the text from one field into separate rows (vertical) or columns (horizontal)

PREPARATION – FORMULA:

  1. Create / update columns using one or more expressions to perform calculations and operations
  2. Deep-dive in to Formula Expressions

Theory:
Different methods to convert NULL to non-NULL values

PARSE – DATETIME:

  1. Alteryx uses the ISO format yyyy-mm-dd HH:MM:SS
  2. Transform date/time data to and from a variety of formats

PREPARATION – MULTI-FIELD FORMULA:

  1. Similar to the functionality as the FORMULA Tool
  2. Advantage: Apply function across multiple fields of data all at once

PREPARATION – UNIQUE:

  1. Splits the data stream in two sets: Unique records based the selected field(s) and Remaining records

PREPARATION – SAMPLE:

  1. Limits the data stream to a specified number, percentage, or random set of the rows

PREPARATION – SELECT RECORDS:

  1. Returns records and ranges of records that are specified, including discontinuous ranges of records

DEVELOPER – DYNAMIC RENAME:

  1. Use with FORMULA tool to get the correct column headers
